Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin. It is required for Calcium absorption, bone growth and development, as well as cell growth, nerve, muscle, immune function, DNA repair and glucose metabolism .
The human body does produce enough vitamin D. When the skin is exposed to sunlight, the ultraviolet (UV) rays strike the skin and trigger the vitamin D synthesis. Hence its nickname “the sunshine vitamin”.
Vitamin D is stored in the body. Therefore, excess amount of Vitamin D can cause high levels to build up which will cause health problems. So stick to the recommended dose and do ont over do it !
Most people meet almost their vitamin D needs through natural production by exposing their face, hands, arms, legs or back without sunscreen, to direct sunlight for at least 30 min (between 10 am and 4 pm avoiding peak hours) everyday or at least 3 times a week.
However, many factors affects this exposure and may decrease the vitamin D production needed, such as: sunscreen, staying indoor for most of the day time, melanin content, siting behind car windows or any other windows, length of day and weather.
Now that we’re entering the autumn/ winter season, exposing our skin to the UV light for natural vitamin D production will no longer be an option.
Whichever diet you’re on, supplementing on vitamin D is a must for everyone during autumn and winter.
I picked the best Vegan vitamin D3 you can get at Amazon:, including liquid form (which is not sold here in Morocco):
How much vitamin D do we need a day ?
Vitamin D recommended daily allowance by the national institue of health (although, doctors recommend 2000 IU a day which is 50 mcg, so that’s how much D3 supplement I take a day):

Vitamin D2 or vitamin D3 ? What's the difference ? Which one is vegan ?
Supplements contains the main two forms of vitamin D: D2 and D3.
- D2 (ergocalciferol): manufactured using UV irradiation on ergosterol in yeast. So vitamin D2 source is always vegan (as long as the supplement does not use gelatine)
- D3 (cholecalciferol): This is the similar form to the one our body produces. D3 can be produced from 2 sources: an animal source and a plant based source. The animal source of D3 is from irradiation of the 7-dehydrocholesterol from lanolin ( a fatty substance found in sheep wool). The vegan vitamin D3 is produced from a natural plant called lichen (lichen is a slow-growing plant on rocks walls and trees). That’s the only vegan source of vitamin D3 supplements.
Although, the body metabolises and actions of vitamin D2 and D3 are almost identical, and they both increases vitamin D level in the body; evidence shows that supplementing in D3 form, increases the vitamin D level higher and last longer. Thats why I favour vitamin D3 supplements. It’s up to you, as long as you supplements 2000 IU of vitamin D a day.
